Why does America feel the need to get involved in everything?

Since America became a world power, it has felt the need to into other countries business. Even now when we are facing economical issues, the government is giving money that it doesn't have in countries such as Libya (they can work things out for themselves! Let the UN do its job to sort it out) I don't understand why America wants to be involved in EVERYTHING.
