Why in the midst of the Energy crisis and oil price hikes, railways are being dismantled all over the world?

In Brazil, at least, part of the problem is that building railroad lines would require destroying parts of the tropical rain forest. That's an even bigger sin to the environmentalists than burning gasoline.
